Gemini vs ChatGPT vs Midjourney: Which AI Image Generator Has the Best Output?
Published February 7, 2026 by Sarah Bainbridge
We've been generating AI images for book covers at Obooko for over a year now, and we've used all three major platforms extensively. here's an honest comparison based on actually using them, not just reading the marketing pages.
Google Gemini (Nano Banana / Imagen)
Strengths: - Integrated directly into Google's ecosystem (Gemini app, AI Studio) - Genuinely good at photorealistic images and text rendering - Fast generation, usually under 10 seconds - Free tier is properly usable (not just a teaser)
Weaknesses: - The diamond watermark on every image (removable with our tool) - Output is typically 1024×1024, which isn't great for print - Occasionally overly cautious content filtering - The invisible SynthID watermark is always present
Cost: Free tier available. Pro at $20/month. Ultra at $20/month removes visible watermark.
ChatGPT (DALL-E 3)
Strengths: - Excellent at following complex, multi-part prompts - Very good text rendering within images - Natural language prompt understanding is genuinely impressive - Integrated into ChatGPT's conversational interface
Weaknesses: - Still outputs relatively low resolution - Can be slow during peak times - Content restrictions can be frustrating - The aesthetic style is recognisable (there's a "DALL-E look" and you'll start to spot it everywhere)
Cost: Available with ChatGPT Plus ($20/month) or via API.
Midjourney
Strengths: - Best aesthetic quality of the three, and honestly it's not close - Incredible at artistic and stylised images - Community-driven, so you can see and learn from others' prompts - V6 model produces stunning results
Weaknesses: - Discord-based interface is clunky (the web app is improving) - Expensive for what you get - Steep learning curve for prompt engineering - Less good at photorealism than Gemini
Cost: Basic plan from $10/month. Standard $30/month. Pro $60/month.
The Watermark Question
- Gemini: Visible diamond watermark + invisible SynthID. Removable with our free tool.
- ChatGPT/DALL-E: No visible watermark. Has invisible C2PA metadata.
- Midjourney: No watermark at all on paid plans.
Our Pick
For book covers and quick concept art (which is what we use it for at Obooko), Gemini is our go-to. Fast, free, and the watermark takes two seconds to remove. For artistic quality, Midjourney is unmatched. For following complex instructions, ChatGPT leads.
If you're using Gemini and the watermark bothers you, remove it here in about two seconds.
